A second hiker has disappeared on California’s Mount Baldy, the same mountain where actor Julian Sands disappeared on Jan. 13, officials said Monday.
Jin Chung, 75, did not return from a walk on Sunday and met two others as scheduled, the San Bernardino sheriff’s department said in a statement.
Sands hasn’t been since Jan. 13, when he set out to summit in the San Gabriel Mountains northeast of Los Angeles.
The search for both men continues. Helicopters and drones with infrared devices were used this weekend to find Sands; high winds prevented aircraft from being used Monday, the sheriff’s department said.
On Monday, ground crews in the Chung case also revisited some previously searched areas to look for Sands, the bureau said.
Sands, 65, who lives in North Hollywood, is partly known for his role in “A Room with a View.”
Chung lives in Los Angeles. He carpooled to the mountain with two other people on Sunday morning and they split up. He would return at 2 p.m. and meet them, the sheriff said.
A British-born actor, Sands starred in the 1985 film “A Room with a View” and other films including “Warlock” (1989) and “Arachnophobia” (1990). He has also appeared in numerous other films and TV shows over the decades.
His family thanked the searchers who were looking for him in a statement from the sheriff. The family said the teams are braving difficult conditions.
Officials have warned of high winds and ice, and a search had to be called off the day after Sands disappeared due to the risk of avalanches.
Mount Baldy has a summit of 10,064 feet, according to the US Forest Service.
