Border Patrol arrested 17 people on the FBI terror list on the southern border in December

Border Patrol agents detained 17 people on the FBI terror list at the southern border in December, bringing the total number arrested at the southern border for the current fiscal year to 38.

The latest Customs and Border Protection (CBP) figures for December, released on Friday, revealed that Border Patrol has arrested 17 people at the southern border whose names match the FBI’s Terrorist Screening Database (TSDB) – which contains information about the identities of those known or “reasonably suspected” of involvement in terrorist activity.

The December figures bring the total number of arrests on the terror list between ports of entry since the start of fiscal year 2023 on October 1 to 38.

There were 98 terror-list arrests in FY22, 15 in FY21, and only three in FY20 at the southern border between ports of entry.

At ports of entry on the northern and southern borders, CBP’s Office of Field Operations has found 125 people on TSDB so far this fiscal year. In FY 2022, there were 380 detentions, 157 in FY21 and 196 in FY20.

While the numbers Border Patrol encountered are only a small fraction of the more than 251,000 migrants found at the southern border in December, it has raised concerns among Republicans not only about some people trying to enter the US, but also about how much can slip past overwhelmed Border Patrol agents.

MORE THAN A QUARTER MILLION MIGRANTS ENCOUNTERED IN DECEMBER ONLY, CONFIRMS CBP

CBP sources told Fox News this week that there were more than 70,000 escapes in the month of December, similar to the number discovered in November. In fiscal year 2022, there were almost 600,000.

Republicans have pointed to the sheer numbers at the border, including escapees, to challenge the Biden administration’s claim that the border is “secure.” Meanwhile, the Biden administration said this week that it is facing a mass migration that has “cracked our hemisphere”.

TOP HOMELAND REPUBLICAN BLOWS ‘AFTER DARK’ RELEASING BORDER NUMBERS, PROMISES ‘TIDS CHANGE’

“The threats and challenges we face are evolving, becoming more diverse and dynamic. Yet we can face this moment if and only if we work together,” Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas said at the US Conference of Mayors.

He also said DHS is “executing a comprehensive strategy to secure our borders and build a safe, orderly and humane immigration system that works within a fractured system in dire need of legislative reform.”

However, Republicans on the House Homeland Security Committee have pledged to increase scrutiny of government policies in the wake of the new numbers, targeting “this refusal to maintain law and order at the border.”

“We look forward to having Secretary Mayorkas before the committee shortly to provide answers and accountability for the significant threat of this border security policy about our homeland security,” Chairman Mark Green said in a statement Friday.
