BEIJING — Chinese leader Xi Jinping won an unprecedented third term as the country’s president on Friday.
Xi rose through China’s political ranks, becoming president in 2013 and abolishing term limits in 2018.
Delegates to the annual National People’s Congress on Friday also formally reappointed Xi as chairman of the Central Military Commission.
At the 20th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party in October, Xi consolidated his control over the ruling party by filling the top circle of leaders with loyalists.
After such party congresses, top leaders of the Chinese Communist Party then hold government positions such as president and prime minister.
Deputies will approve China’s new prime minister on Saturday.
Xi will speak at the closing ceremony of the parliamentary assembly on Monday. The new prime minister will speak to the press later that day.
Deputies on Friday approved a proposal to restructure the State Council, the highest executive body of the Chinese government.
A draft of the plan was released earlier this week and is expected to come as China’s ruling Communist Party will significantly increase its direct control over the government.
