Priyanka Chopra reflects on her baby’s first year of life and admits she and her husband Nick Jonas didn’t know if Malti would “make it” as they spent three months watching over her in the neonatal intensive care unit.
“I’ve really protected this chapter of my life with my daughter. Because it’s not just about my life. It’s hers too,” Chopra told British Vogue for its February issue. The article was published just after her daughter’s first birthday.
Chopra and Jonas’ daughter was born a full trimester early last year on January 15 via a surrogate.
“I was in the OR [operating room] when she came out,” the “Quantico” actress told Vogue during an interview at her home while playing with Malti. “She was so small, smaller than my hand. I saw what the intensive care nurses do. They are doing God’s work. Nick and I both stood there as they intubated her. I don’t know how they even found what they needed [in her tiny body] to intubate her.”

She said they spent every day with Malti on her or his chest for the next three months before they could take her home.
“I didn’t know if she was going to make it or not,” she explained.
Malti is now “healthy and thriving,” Chopra celebrated, but said that as a “NICU mom,” she still struggles to shake those concerns about her daughter’s health.

“The first time she had a solid bite [of food] she was retching and I thought I killed her,” she said, adding that her mother and in-laws have been extremely supportive of the baby and explained that things like that are normal with babies.
“But because I’m a NICU mom, there’s so much at stake,” she said. “And I have to shake that off. I will.”
Jonas, who took part in the interview, called fatherhood “overwhelming” but said there’s “nothing like it”.
A recent appearance on Kelly Clarkson’s show, Jonas said he and his wife had a party for Malti.

“We had to celebrate something,” he said. “She’s had a pretty wild journey early in her life, so we had to celebrate in style. She’s one. She’s beautiful. It’s amazing — the best.”
