‘It’s disturbing and violent’: The creators of The Last Of Us reveal why they chose to film THAT stomach-chugging kiss scene in episode two

The creators of The Last Of Us discussed the stomach-churning kiss scene in episode two that got viewers talking.

The show is centered around the parasitic Cordyceps fungus – which has a tendency to infect insects – which evolves to control the human race and is “real,” according to showrunner Craig Mazin.

In the second episode, viewers were introduced to the ‘clickers’, people who have become so infected with the fungus that they are no longer recognizable as human.

The episode ended with Tess (Anna Torv) sacrificing herself to save Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey).

Having already become infected, Tess doused a building with gasoline and lured the infected to her, allowing the other two to escape.

Just as she lit the flame, viewers watched as one of the infected leaned forward and kissed her, his tendrils in her mouth.

The Last Of Us creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin discussed the scene with Variety, describing it as “disturbing.”

Mazin said, “We were already talking about tendrils coming out and we were asking these philosophical questions: ‘Why are infected people violent? When it comes to spreading the fungus, why do they have to be violent?’ We found out they don’t.

“They are violent because we resist, but what if you don’t? What does it look like if you just stand dead still and let this happen?

“Then we landed on this nightmare fuel. It’s disturbing and it’s violent. I think it’s very primary in the way it enters your own body. To use an overused word: it triggers.”

The show changed the plot of the video game, where Anna was killed by soldiers.

The parasitic fungal infection – inspired by the real life ophiocordyceps unilateralis – killed 60% of the population and has four stages of infection, making humans increasingly resemble zombie-like monsters that use echolocation.

It takes a person more than a decade to reach stage four of the infection, where they develop hardened fungal plaques, release infectious spores, and become increasingly difficult to kill.

The Last of Us also features Nick Offerman, Melanie Lynskey, Storm Reid, Gabriel Luna, and Merle Dandridge.
